Bike-powered Ginger Ninjas Coming to Portland

This weekend Portland will be graced with a visit from the Ginger Ninjas a band founded by Kipchoge Spencer, who is also one of the co-founder’s of the incredibly cool bike-bits company, Xtracycle.

The Ginger Ninjas are on the road with their “Pleasant Pedal Revolution,” riding to their tour locations, hauling their equipment on Xtracycle bikes (hard-tail frames converted into burly long-tail cargo-carrying bikes), and powering their mics and amps by the pedalling force of volunteers from the audience. Their stop in Portland is a last-minute switch, so they’re looking for places to play over the weekend.

As Jonathan Maus writes on the Bike Portland blog, “Last year they loaded up for a 5,000 mile journey from Northern California to Mexico City — nearly 100% human powered and with all their music gear in tow.” Cool.

You can read the rest of the article here.

And if you have a spot where these guys can play, let us know! We’ll pass it on.

    Hi Nau, and Nau fans!
I just want to add a comment to your blog… to say that I am quite glad that you are still doing what you do. I work full-time in the apparel industry myself, and right here in the little “ECO” corner of it. I watched the Nau brand grow, and then shrink a wee bit. I’m very aware of the pressure of doing business, and at the same time making money like everyone else – in particular; making the same money that the polluters and exploiters are going after. It is allot more work, but very satisfying, to make something better – to make something green.
As a customer, I’m not a hard-core athlete. I’m just a hobby cyclist, skateboarder, hiker, kyaker… blah blah – basically I like to stay fit and I live in the city. My life used to revolve around back-country skiing, but now it kind of revolves around work and artistic endevours, and paying the mortgage and the rest of the bills… trying to save money.
I just want to say – this is so great that your passion is still strong….
We will all be watching – keep it real!

P.S. I love to travel, I love practicing languages, I love to read…. and I’m getting married this summer – that’s me all wrapped up!

    Hi Jason,

Well put! Thanks for following us through our hectic year- it’s thanks to customers like you that we were given a second chance to follow our passion and hopefully inspire others to do the same.

I look forward to the day “green” disappears from “green business” because it is the norm and no longer a niche. It will be interesting to see what happens to the polluters and the exploiters as this shift takes place.

Like you, most of us are not hard core athletes, rather outdoor enthusiasts who also love the city life. If you’re ever in Portland, stop in to say hello, we love meeting our fans. Congratulations and best of luck with the wedding!
