Have Bike, Have Trailer, Will Travel

Ian_Bikes.jpg

A few months ago, our good friend Ian Momsen told us that he was planning a six-month bicycle tour across the US. After a fleeting moment of envy, we knew that exciting adventures and challenges were ahead for this fellow Portlander. Ian’s objective for this trip is to connect people with places across the country through his photography and writing while leaving the smallest carbon footprint he can. Hitting the road with only a few key items—his bicycle, trailer, tent, computer, camera and solar panels (to charge his electronics)—the trip began.

Now, a month and half in and covering over 2,000 miles, Ian’s journey is taking him much further than he had ever imagined. Keeping a daily blog filled with rich descriptions and colorful images of the road, he’s able to bring us along on his amazing ride.

Meeting friends both new and old along the way, Ian is discovering the generosity of the human spirit while facing the challenges of the human body. Whether it’s stopping for the occasional ice cream in the middle of a 100-mile stretch, soaking up picturesque surroundings, or bumping into a British man riding a Penny Farthing across the world, it’s clear that his adventure has only just begun.

For those who can’t jump on your bicycle and take off for half the year like Ian (just yet), you can follow his travels at studio-en. If you’re lucky enough to live near our Boulder store, join us for our Collective Commons event Thursday, May 8th from 7:00- 9:00pm where Ian will be sharing his stories from the road.

Check out www.cirquevideo.com out of Chapel Hill, NC. They’ve got documntary videos about biking across the country and hiking the A.T.

    Ian,
How are you doing? First time I’ve seen your blog - sounds great!
From the trip map, it looks like you have seen some great places
and climbed a few hills as well as some of those long, across-the-plains
trips that I originally thought would be very boring, but turned out
to be very interesting. From trying to identify the assorted road kill to just
the vastness of the plains that is somehow lost while driving at 70.

Just reading about your adventures makes me want to hop on the bike again and join you! Take care and have fun!
