Doug,
You sound scared, and you oughtn't. I bet you hear about car accidents every day too, but does that stop you from driving? Someone's gotta lead the way, demonstrate what's possible and realistic. Why denigrate the "obese slackers" in this country (and elsewhere) when you have a chance to make a move? Local governments won't just put in bike lanes out of their infinite wisdom and kindness; they'll wait until they see that there's a demand for them. You getting on your bike, telling your story, speaking up at city hall, and otherwise participating in the get-bikelanes-made process is what we (including all those fatties) need. Get out there and start pedaling, man.

I love the idea of people riding bikes for fun, to school, some to work and commuting but let's be realistic. The challenge is to get a nation with chronic obese slackers off the couch and walking first before they ride. Also to be practical you must compel local governments to set aside bike lanes for the safety of riders. I lived in NYC and heard about someone being hit every week while attempting to ride a bike. Remember like babies, they must learn to crawl before walking. Peace and keep pedaling.
