People We Admire: Tom Wegener

Posted by hal | February 19th, 2007 | Filed under Positive Change, Who We Are

Just saw a couple of videos on youtube promoting Tom Wegener’s surfboards. Ever since I saw the segment on him and his family in Thomas Campbell’s Sprout, he’s been a major inspiration — not just as a surfer, though he’s definitely one of the more stylish longboarders I’ve seen — but for the way he seems to have integrated his sport, his craft and his love of family into one very happy, healthy existence. I know it’s not right to envy someone else, but if I could pick just one person to trade places with…

“That’s all I want to do in life: I want to surf a lot, have a nice family, and make these really nice surfboards. It just makes me happy that they’ll last a long long time.” — Tom Wegener

Anyway, If I ever decide to run away from home (again), I’m going straight to Queensland. If I’m lucky, the Wegeners will be open to adoption.

Love the way Tom handle the board. He’s like a Gene Kelly on a surfboard dancing around like he’s in a dance hall. Saw another segment on You Tube with Laird Hamilton surfing a board that looks a lot like the 16 footer Tom is surfing in Promo #2. Laird was standing on the board using a paddle to gain enough speed to catch the wave. Been checking out some big wave surfing from Jaws and Mavericks. Nice change of pace to watch Tom being so fluid and full of soul out there.

Hey Hal…I was just about to email you to say that the new Patagonia catalog (Yosemite) was “best ever” when I found I’d misplaced your email address. So I tracked you down.

I suppose you saw the piece we did on Tom, TSJ 14.1 “Sure Form”…if not let me know and I’ll get you a copy. Those are some looong boards, but Tom can handle them.

Hope you are groovin’ in Portland and if you come down this way (JT in spring?) call for a sess.

Hey Jeff- Great to hear from you.
Yeah, the new book is a beauty. Those guys at Patagonia still produce the best catalog out there. And you guys are still heads and hands above the rest in terms of magazines. You wouldn’t believe the number of times I’ve heard people say “It’s the Surfer’s Journal of ski mags, or it’s the Surfer’s Journal of flyfishing, etc… Anyhow, my bad for not mentioning your article on Tom. I did read it. My collection of TSJ is one of the things that definitely made the transition from Ventura to Portland a smoother one.
As to the session, well, I do sneak down to Faria every so often. I’ll call you on my next trip south. Let’s get in the water. Meanwhile, if you’re ever up in Portland,we can do some skiing, or surfing if you bring your 6/4and booties.

    Hey Hal,

I’m trying to reach Tom for an article I’m doing for Best Life magazine but the cell on his website’s not working and he’s not responding to email. Do you have different contact info than what’s listed on his website by chance? Thanks. Best, Joel
